  • An additional dose of preparation may increase the chance of a response from a weakened immune system.
  • Booster shots remind a healthy immune system to stay prepared.

Update on bivalent booster and Covid

UPMC currently offers Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax vaccines.

The US Food and Drug Administration recently authorized two Omicron-specific boosters from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. Boosters are important to ensure you are protected against the COVID-19 virus and the Omicron variant. They are called bivalent vaccines and protect against two or two viruses.

These booster shots are bivalent in that they target both the original version of the coronavirus and the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants. The FDA no longer authorizes the original monovalent formulations as boosters in people 6 months and older. The original Moderna and Pfizer vaccines against COVID-19 continue to be licensed as a primary vaccine series for people 6 months and older.

The bivalent booster dose provides increased protection against newer Omicron sub-variants. Previous vaccination or natural immunity against infection provides only partial protection.
