Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Boca Raton Eyelid Surgeon
Eyelid surgery, known medically as blepharoplasty, is a surgical technique performed to repair droopy eyelids by removing excess skin and fat around the eye and sometimes tightening the supporting muscles.
The best candidates for eyelid surgery are physically healthy men and women who are realistic in their expectations. Most are 35 or older, but if drooping and baggy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age. You may also be a candidate for blepharoplasty if droopy eyelids prevent you from opening your eyes fully or if droopy skin pulls down on your lower eyelids.

It's time to consider eyelid surgery
As you get older, you may notice that your friends ask if you are tired or if everything is okay. These statements could be a red flag that he is looking for a short resume. They are most likely noticing your eyes first. As you begin to turn 30, your upper and lower eyelids may start to look tired, puffy, or droopy. You can chalk this up to the fact that as we age, our eyelids begin to stretch and the supporting muscles underneath tend to weaken over time.
Unfortunately, as we age, the eyelids can stretch and the supporting muscles can weaken. Fortunately, a procedure called blepharoplasty can help repair your eyelids and make you look brighter and younger in no time.
Candidates for eyelid surgery include:
- Physically healthy men and women
- Those who have realistic expectations of what the surgery offers.
- If you are 35 years or older
- Family history of wide eyelids or bags under the eyes.
- Anyone who has trouble opening their eyes fully.
- If your eyelids are causing a "hood" over your eyes
- When excess skin on the upper eyelids restricts your vision, especially your peripheral vision
- If sagging skin pulls down the lower eyelids
How eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) works
Eyelid surgery can help remove drooping and droopy eyelids. It works by removing excess skin or fat around the eye. During eyelid surgery, your doctor will tighten the supporting muscles to create a refreshed appearance. For people of Asian descent, a blepharoplasty can add a crease to the upper eyelid without erasing the evidence of your beautiful natural heritage.

Why do the eyelids droop and the eyelids droop?
Your reasons for needing eyelid surgery are personal and may differ from case to case. What usually happens is that tight eyelids happen because excess fat accumulates above or below the eyelids. This excess accumulation of fat causes the eyebrows to droop and contributes to drooping eyelids and heavy bags under the eyes.
Sometimes loose skin can really impede your vision, particularly your peripheral vision. This happens when the hooded upper eyelid restricts the view of the upper outer corner of the eye. This can greatly affect your vision and make it unsafe to perform certain tasks, including driving.

Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery
You may need an eyelid surgical procedure for either the lower or upper eyelid, depending on what is happening. Many patients choose to have both done to achieve a balanced look on both the top and bottom.
To look younger, lighter and less drooping, there are two types of eyelid surgery:Upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty.
1. Upper blepharoplasty
During an upper blepharoplasty, your doctor will take care of the appearance of your upper eyelid. The incision is made in the natural fold line that occurs 1 cm above the eyelashes. The incision may extend to crow's feet or frown lines at the outer corners of the eyes. Your surgeon will separate the skin from the subcutaneous layers and remove excess fat and cut away sagging muscle and skin. The incisions will be closed with very fine sutures or surgical glue.
2. Lower blepharoplasty
Lower blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that treats the appearance of the lower eyelid. This incision usually begins at the outer edge of the eyelashes. The skin is then lifted up and out, gently tightening the area as the overlying skin is removed. Your incisions will be closed with very fine sutures. In older patients, laser lower lid resurfacing is recommended to erase fine lines and renew the delicate lower lid area.
What to expect from eyelid surgery
During eyelid surgery, you will be in the hands of the talented and renowned surgeon Dr. Scott Ennis. But before your surgery is even an option, he will meet for a consultation to discuss the goals and expected results of your surgery. A complete physical examination and a photograph of your eyelids will be performed during your consultation. Your medical team will meet to discuss the best approach for your surgery. If your eyelids are blocking your vision in any way, you will also have an eye exam before surgery.
Day of the Eyelid Surgery Procedure
When the day of surgery arrives, a special numbing medicine will be injected into your eyelids to prevent you from feeling anything during the procedure. You will receive IV medications to help you relax and feel comfortable during surgery. You will be dazed and sedated. Dr. Ennis will cut along the crease of the eyelid, remove the necessary skin, muscle, and fat, and then close the incision. Surgery usually takes less than two hours for most clients.
The recovery process
After blepharoplasty, you will notice that you may experience blurred vision (due to the necessary ointment put on your eyes during surgery), watery eyes, sensitivity to light, and some pain that will begin to subside. You may also have bruises around your eyes that look like a black eye. Before you leave, you will be instructed in how to fully care for your healing incisions.
You will apply cold compresses to your eyes to reduce swelling and discomfort. A few days after surgery, you will return to Ennis Plastic Surgery for follow-up with the medical team to ensure optimal healing and recovery. You must continue to protect the delicate skin around your eyelids from excessive sun exposure on an ongoing basis.
For some clients, the results of blepharoplasty last the rest of their lives, but for others, droopy eyelids can recur. This is often the result of heredity, environmental damage caused by the sun, and skin care practices.

Complementary Procedures with Blepharoplasty
There are some things that eyelid surgery simply cannot do. This includes removing superficial wrinkles, raising droopy brows, or lightening dark circles. For these problems, there are other surgical or regenerative medicine procedures available at Ennis Plastic Surgery that can complement blepharoplasty. For example, if you are concerned with correcting drooping eyelids but also improving fine lines and wrinkles, you may benefit from blepharoplasty followed by a series of regenerative medicine treatments such asskin rejuvenation.
If you are concerned about droopy eyelids or droopy brows, you may want to consider a blepharoplasty with abrow lift. Share all of your concerns with Dr. Ennis and he will educate you on the available options and procedures that best suit your needs. He'll be surprised at the results he gets by adding a little more work to the equation.
